December 2009 Archives

December 4, 2009

Week of December 7th

We will begin the week by spending about twenty minutes of Monday's class time talikng about the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor 68 years ago and the effect it had on our country.

English
We will continue to review the concepts from the first three chapters in the English book at the beginning of each class this week.
Writing
To date the children have read three articles about sportsmanship: "What is Sportsmanship," Poor Sportsmanship in America," and ""Central Washington Offers up the Ultimate Act of Sportsmanship." They have also created index cards with important information from each article.
This week we will read the final two articles: "Shooting Down a Myth," and "What it Takes to be Number 1." By the end of the week I hope to have the children begin writing their research paper. The final paper will be six paragraphs and I will guide them through is paragraph.

Science
The test on Herman will be the week before Christmas break. To date you child should have twelve parts of the human body in his/her notebook on the Herman page and a simple job written for each body part. There will be a total of seventeen body parts on the test.
This week the Circulatory System will be introduced. The test on the unit titled Cells to Systems will not be until after Christmas break.

Week of December 14th

Writing
The children finished reading their last article on Sportsmanship Friday. Originally it was going to be "What it Takes to Be Number 1" by Vince Lombard, but I came across another article entitled "Two Choices" last week and felt that this was a much better choice. This week we will begin setting up the research paper as a class. I do not expect the children to finish these papers before break.

Science
This week will be spent reviewing and preparing for the Herman test which is Thursday. Each child should have a set of notes in the science notebook entitled "Herman." On this page there should be seventeen body parts and a simple job for each part.
