English
We will continue our study of linking verbs this week. We will also focus on identifying the different kinds of verbs. There will be a section on the next English test where the children will have to distinguish between linking, helping, action and irregular verbs.
Writing
The children will continue their Sports Reporter papers this week. These will be due on Friday.
Science
The test on the Human Body is Thursday, January 15th. The section of notes for this test begins Cells to Systems and ends with the Skeletal System. The test on Herman is scheduled for Wednesday, January 21st. This section of notes is titled Herman. Also, on Thursday, January 22nd, the children will begin making their human body t-shirts. Each child will need a white t-shirt that is the appropriate size by that date. A note will be coming home this week with more information on this project.

English
We will continue the linking verb chapter this week with the focus being on linking verbs in the past tense. I am hoping to give the test on this chapter late next week.
Writing
The children will write their final copies for their sports Reporter paper this week. These papers will then be placed into their writing folders not to be seen again until 8th grade. I will also begin the second type of writing this week which is Expository Writing. This writing will include: a "How to" paper, a cause and effect paper, and a compare and contrast paper. We will begin with the "How to." When the writing assignment is complete each child will have to present their paper to the class. They will need to bring the materials that are a part of their paper. For instance, someone may choose the topic; How to Swing a Bat Correctly, in which case the child will need to bring a bat to school to demonstrate what they have written. The grading for this paper will consist of three parts: 1. detailed writing, 2. presentation, and 3. materials needed were brought in.
Science
The children will take the test on "Herman" on Wednesday. Please review the Herman page in your child's notebook with them. The test will be two parts: 1. identifying the part or organ as I hold it up and 2. matching the organ or part to the job it does. The children will also make their Human body T-shirts on Thursday. Please make sure that your child has a white t-shirt that fits them appropriately for that day.

English
We will wrap up the chapter on linking verbs this week. The test will be on Wednesday, February 4th. The review will be given on Monday and due to Tuesday's field trip the test will have to be given on Wednesday.

Writing
I was unable to start the "How to" writing assignment last week so we will begin working on it this week.

Science
On Tuesday the children will go to the second and third grade classrooms and present their body T-shirts. On Wednesday, we will begin the next unit in science which is The Solar System. Their will be a vocabulary quiz on Friday.
