Weeks of January 4th and January 8th

English
The next chapter that will be covered in English is Linking Verbs. (pages 224 - 233 in the book) This is a very short and somewhat easy chapter. I will not be breaking the chapter down into sections but rather just testing on the entire chapter. It should take a week or two to get through the chapter.
On Thursday (1/4) I will be introducing Diamantes. These are a type of poetry that follow specific directions for writing. (these can be found on page 177) The children will begin writing their own Diamantes on Thursday and finish them up on Monday.

Writing
Friday (1/5) the children will be going to the computer lab to type their Persuasive Essays on lengthening the lunch period. This writing assignment will be placed into their writing folder, not to be seen again until eighth grade. The week of January 8th the children will begin their second Persuasive Essay. The topic this time will be about video games and time spent on the computer.

Science
We will continue on with the Unit on the planets. At this point we are half way through the unit.

Week of January 15th

English

Tuesday we will be reviewing for the English Test that will be on Wednesday, January 17th. The test will cover pages 224 – 233 in the English book. However, the best way to study for the test is to look over the review sheet that should be coming home Tuesday.
On Thursday, January 18th the student teacher will begin teaching English/Writing to the children. The first chapter that will be covered be Miss Blough is adjectives. She will also be working on descriptive writing with the children. Please know that I will be in the room at all times and will be making sure that all lessons are productive and that the time is used effectively.

Science
We are wrapping up the chapter on the Solar System this week. The children have learned quite a bit about the Solar System that we live in. When you look at their notebook the amount of information may seem extensive. Please know that I have been going over the information every day and am confident that they are well prepared for the test. The test will be on Friday. January 19th.

Any questions or concerns please feel free to e- mail me at any time.

Week of January 22nd

English
Last week the children began diagramming sentences. This is a great way for the children to learn the various parts of the sentence. I will continue to cover diagramming sentences for the next few weeks. Miss Blough continues to cover the chapter on adjectives. This is a difficult concept for some children. If you get a chance, can you please review adjectives with your child and if you feel they need more help in mastering the topic please send me a letter and I will be happy to review with them in the morning before school.

Writing
Miss Blough continues to work on descriptive writing. This type of writing works well with the chapter on adjectives.

Science
Miss Blough will begin the unit on the Water Cycle on Monday. This chapter can be found in the fourth grade science book. If you would like to get a copy of the book to have at home please send me a letter and I will send one home with your child.

Miss Blough will be with me until March 4th. Then she will join Mrs. Sullivan for eight weeks. Please know that I am in the room and am monitoring all lessons that are presented.

The students will be finishing up their Descriptive Essays on Monday and going into the computer lab to type them on Tuesday. If your child’s essay is not completed in class on Monday it will have to be finished at home Monday evening.
