Happy Monday! Catholic School's Week last week was very busy and fun! This week we get back to normal! In Reading we will be reading One Grain of Rice! Our lesson will focus on comparing and contrasting. We are wrapping up unit 7 in English. A test on verb be, contractions, and suffixes is scheduled for Thursday! We are also developing our first five paragraph papers with our families being the topic. Social Studies is moving along. We are currently talking about goods, services, needs, and wants. A study guide will be coming home by the end of the week with a test scheduled for early next week, probably Tuesday! In Math we have begun MULTIPLICATION! I cannot stress enough the importance of memorizing the basic facts to 12. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Please focus on facts of 0,1,2, and 5. When the kids have mastered those add on the 9s, then the 3s. Any extra time on this concept truly benefits your child in the end! Unit 23 is the unit we're on in Spelling, it has several homophones, so students need to know spelling AND meanings. Next Tuesday, we will be celebrating Valentine's Day. If your child would like to bring in a wrappped treat with valentines, that would be wonderful! Have a great week!

Know that every day I am thankful to be a part of your child's education and appreciate what fantastic kids they are and the supportive parents you are! We have quite a few activities planned for the week from the Jesse White Tumblers to partner reading to crazy socks! In the midst of all the fun, we will manage to get some work done as well! In spelling we continue working with r controlled vowels using the ur, ear, ir, and or spellings. We will be spending the week reading and analyzing the story Thunder Cake. The "verb be" will be reviewed along with contractions in English. We put aside the Science books for a few weeks and return to Social Studies. Communities at work will be our focus. At last . . . . Multiplication has begun in Math! Today we made booklets called Circles and Stars to help us understand that multiplication shows addition in equal groups. Be sure to check them out! We will be spending much time in this area. PLEASE - PLEASE - PLEASE be sure that your child practices EVERY night! Thank you! That's it for now! Have a wonderful week!

We will be working with "r controlled" vowels in spelling. Area, Perimeter, and Volume will continue to be the topic in Math. If all goes well, we will most likely wrap up our Geometry unit by the end of the week! Multiplication follows! It's a good idea to start practicing multiplication with the flashcards. Start with the facts of 1, 2 and 5. In English we will learn more about verbs focusing on the "verb be" (is-am-are-was-were). We will also finish up discussions and projects on Mr. Popper's Penguins. Our next story is Sam and the Lucky Money which teaches another great lesson on being thankful for what we have! A test in Science is scheduled for Friday with a study guide going home tomorrow! It was a quick unit with only 3 lessons, so we should be ready with time and effort in the studying department! The Animal Research Reports are due on Thursday! PLEASE refer to the direction packet for what needs to be turned in! A cover, fact sheet, sloppy copy with editing, final copy, and project are all due for points! The presentation of animal should only last a minute or so and should be practiced at home! Thank you for all your time in this project! I genuinely appreciate it! Please join us in celebrating Catholic Schools Week on Sunday at 10:00 mass! Open House will follow! I hope to see you all there! I want to thank you for all you do and the sacrifices you make to send your child to St. John Fisher! I know it's not always easy!
Happy Tuesday! I hope you all enjoyed the three day weekend, and the snow made for some entertainment for you and your family. We have been working hard and will continue to do so this week in third grade! In Math we will continue with Geometry skills. Area, Perimeter, and Volume will be introduced! In Reading we are reading Ananse's Feast. The kids really seem to like this story and the valuable lesson learned from it; "What comes around, goes around!" We will continue in Science with more work on animals and changes in ecosystems. I hope you all had a chance to hear about our animal research paper, project, and presentation due on January 26th. Directions and expectations were carefully gone over here in school, please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions. For English class, we will continue reading and working on Mr. Popper's Penguins. So far, we are enjoying the story. Progress reports will be sent home on Wednesday! Please look them over and let me know if you have any concerns. I hope that you see the academic growth in your child as I have. Praise work done well and encourage better work if needed. Please sign and return the note by Thursday. Just a heads up that Catholic Schools Week begins with a Sunday mass celebration on January 29th!
Welcome to 2012 in Third Grade! I can't believe the new year is here! Last week we had two days to get back into the swing of things. so today we are ready to rock and roll! In Spelling our unit will focus on words writers use like every and friend. We wrapped up Unit 3 in Reading last Friday. We will prepare for the unit test to be given on Wednesday. As always there is an essay question. The essay for this test will be about comparing two different jobs your child might like to have when they grow up. We will be creating these in class, but they will need to be edited at home. The students will be fully aware of expectations. We will also begin a novel, Mr. Popper's Penguins, in class and will work on that along with our regular series for the remainder of the month. In Math, Geometry will be our new topic. We will continue work with addition and subtraction as well. Multiplication will follow. A Science study guide will be sent home today - a test is sceduled for Thursday on Living Things in Ecosystems. Being prepared and practicing the short answer questions is always a good idea. The kids are so much more confident in taking these types of tests when they know they have worked hard and studied nightly. Writing activities will fill our time in English. As you can see, we are ready for the new year and new topics! Thank you so very much for the Christmas collection and the extra surprises too. I genuinely appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity. I am blessed! Enjoy the long weekend and this unbelievable weather!

HO! HO! HO! Eight more school days to go! JB (our class elf on a shelf) is watching us and reporting our good and bad behavior to Santa! Hopefully we stay on the "nice" list! Work will continue as normal here in Room 218! In Spelling we will focus on the schwa sound with a pretest on Wednesday and a post test on Friday. Our Reading story will be Brave as a Mountain Lion. Our skill lesson will focus on visualization, creating pictures in our head using the text from the story. Verb action will continue in English. Look for a unit test to be given soon. We are back to Science! We will be working hard learning all about ecosystems, food chains, and food webs. A timeline project was given last week and is due on Thursday. Please take a minute to look over these with your child. As it is a home project, kids need to be aware that sometimes it's a good idea for work to be checked and edited. Extra time and effort is a good idea too! Subtraction with regrouping is going well. I cannot stress enough the importance of neat, careful work. Please encourage your child to take one step at a time, think about the step, and follow through. They all know what to do but sometimes hurry and make careless mistakes. It's hard to believe that Christmas is soon here and 2012 is right around the corner. I thought you might enjoy the following story - it's one of my favorites. Merry Christmas to you all and to all a good break! I will see the kids back in class on Thursday January 5th. Please be reminded that we have a full day next Monday and Tuesday with an 11:30 dismissal next Wednesday!

First Christmas Adventure With Grandma...

I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the way my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered. "Even dummies know that!"
My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her "world-famous" cinnamon buns I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma said so. It had to be true.
Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus?" she snorted...."Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad!! Now, put on your co at, and let's go."
"Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second world-famous cinnamon bun.
"Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars.
That was a bundle in those days. "Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it I'll wait for you in the car."
Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's. I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but I never had I shopped for anything all by myself.
The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for. I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church.
I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's third grade class.
Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out to recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough; he didn't have a good coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat!
I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that.
"Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.
"Yes, ma'am," I replied shyly. "It's for Bobby."
The nice lady smiled at me, as I told her about how Bobby really needed a good winter coat. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag, smiled again, and wished me a Merry Christmas.
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat (a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her Bible) in Christmas paper and ribbons and wrote, "To Bobby, From Santa Claus" on it. Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy.
Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially, one of Santa's helpers.
Grandma parked down the street from Bobby's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going."
I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his door and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma.
Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.
Fifty years haven't dimmed the thrill o f those moments spent shivering, beside my Grandma, in Bobby Decker's bushes.
That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team. I still have the Bible, with the coat tag tucked inside: $19.95.
May you always have LOVE to share, HEALTH to spare and FRIENDS that care....And may you always believe in the magic of Santa Claus!

We will begin a new story called Mom's Best Friend in Reading and our focus will be on text structure. Digraphs and clusters will be on the list for Spelling. Past, present, and future tense action verbs will be explored in English. Today we will review for the Social Studies test set for tomorrow. Study guides went home last week, and we wrote exellent examples of the essay question in their Social Studies notebook - please encourage your child to be prepared! It's very hard not to help the kids on tests - but they need to learn good study skills and realize that effort in anything pays off! We will pick up with Science again on Wednesday. Subtraction with regrouping will be covered in Math! We will spend a lot of time working on this skill. Again if basic facts are difficult for your child, this concept becomes harder for them. Mathletics is a great new resource to use for practice and review! We will be celebrating the Immaculate Conception this week and donations for Sacks for Santa will be collected. A timeline home project will be sent home some time this week that will be due next week. Care and attention to neatness and grammar will be expected. Only 13 more school days until a nice, long break! Have a wonderful week!

Today we have a fresh start academically as we officially begin the second trimester of third grade! We have been working so hard in class. From writing, to reading, to math, I am very proud of the kids' efforts and hope you can see the development of good habits taking shape. We have another full and busy week planned this week in third grade. Today we will review for the Unit 2 skills test in Reading. Generally speaking, you cannot study for this test. Students need to relax, read carefully, and follow directions. We worked on a study guide today and prepared a good paragraph on descriptive writing. These essays are worth 20 points and should be well written. Students may use the essay we created in class on Wednesday for the test. Math is moving along. We will continue to review addition with regrouping. We also will be counting money. Any extra help with this concept, giving change, or adding money is a great benefit to the kids. Giving back change can be an especially difficult concept for some, so please ask your child how they are doing. I am available after school for extra help if needed. We really enjoyed working on the ipads last week, there are some great educational apps if you are interested on the money topic. We will continue with writing skills in English and communities from the past in Social Studies. Report cards will be sent home on Friday! Conference schedules will be sent home soon, so please look for those. I am looking forward to meeting with you all! Have a great week!
