This week in Rm. 204 we will be busy. There are many activities planned for Catholic Schools Week, so it will spice things up a little. It was great to see so many families at Open House on Sunday. We truly appreciate all of our families and their support of our school.

In Social Studies this week, the students are presenting their papers on Greek gods and goddesses. We also continue with our study of Athens, Sparta nd the Peloponnesian war. No tests are scheduled for this week.

In Religion, we are talking about service to others as part of our Catholic Schools week mission. I hope the children are offering to help out at home and showing concern for others. We also begin our Chapter 8 review. The test will be next Tuesday. Lent will be here in a few weeks, so we will also focus on that in the next couple of weeks.

I hope you have a nice week..

It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the month already. Christmas is but a distant memory. I hope everyone had a nice weekend. We have had a few flu illnesses in fifth and sixth grade. I am reminding the students to wash hands and to not share food. If your child is ill please make sure that you give it the minimum 24 hr. rule of rest at home.

This week in Social Studies, we begin ancient Greece and the study of all that this country has contributed to the world. We will also begin a project on Greek gods/godesses. The IPADS will be available to us on Thursday and Friday of this week, so students will be doing research for their particular god/godess. Project information will be sent home on Thursday regarding a poster and the due date for the project. Please ask your child to share that information with you. The project will be on display for our Catholic Schools open house on the 29th.

Happy New Year to all our families! I hope your holidays were wonderful. Last week was a short one, and it gave us all a chance to make a mild re-entry.

The 6th grade continues with the study of ancient China. This week we learn about the teachings of Confucius. We begin our chapter review as well to prepare for the chapter test on Friday. Next week we will begin our study of Ancient Greece.

In 5th grade, we enter into Ordinary time in the church calendar. We continue with our study of grace and how it helps us meet everyday challenges in our lives. We will learn about Saul's conversion, and how grace affected the life of Katherine Drexel. Music Fridays are going great, and the classes really enjoy this part of the week. I am learning a lot of songs that I am unfamiliar with, but the choices they have made are certainly thought provoking. We will have a short quiz later in the week.

Have a wonderful week!

It's our last full week before our holiday break. Where does the time go? We are trying to keep the proverbial "lid" on things, but the children are anxious for the holiday.

In 5th grade Religion, we will have a test on Chapter 6 on Thursday. We are also taking time to watch The Nativity Story, a film based on the birth of Jesus and the events leading up to it. It is a very helpful movie and it gives the students an accurate portrayal of the history of that time.

In 6th grade, we have begun our study of Ancient China. Today, we read about the Shang dynasty and the importance of that time in the history of China. We will have a quiz on the first two lessons later in the week. The students will not have a test until after the break.

I hope you received the note about our little gift exchange that we will have in class on the 21st. It's always fun and the students enjoy it. We will have donuts and juice in the morning as well. Our usual prayer service will be in church at 10:30.

I sincerely hope that all of our families have a wonderful Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2012 !

It looks like we may be in for some snow this week. It has been so nice not having to deal with all of that. Our field trip to Navy Pier was so much fun! The movie was excellent and it was a good day. The students were excellent and very polite. Thank you to all of our parent chaperones !

This week in Social Studeies, we are preparing for our chapter test on India. Part 1 of the test will be Thursday and Part 2 on Friday. There is quite a bit of material to study and I have encouraged the students to study a little each night to prepare. We will work on one of the essays tomorrow as well as review all the lessons. I have told the students that they need to slow down with their work as they are not answering written questions specifically. There is a lot of sloppy work as well, so please continue to urge your child to do his/her very best. School is not a race.

In Religion, we continue with our Advent/Christmas lessons. We will have a quiz on Friday covering the material we are currently learning. We will have an all school mass on Thursday as it is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. All are welcome to attend at 10 a.m.

It was very nice to speak with all of you on conference day. We have some very wonderful boys and girls this year! Thank you again for all that you do as parents.

This week is fairly short. We have our Navy Pier field trip on Thursday. Please make sure your child wears their gym uniform and has money to purchase a lunch. I hope the weather is not as windy and nasty as today. No school on Friday.

It was a tough loss for our 5th and 6th graders, but they were terrific the whole season. They should be proud of all of their hard work in getting to the final game.

This week, we finished up our study of Mesopotamia and move on to the study of India, a very fascinating country. The sixth grade took their test yesterday and they did quite well. I know that having a parent assist in their studying is so helpful. The information they are learning can be difficult to understand and there is so much information they have to learn. Thank you for keeping a watch on their study habits and looking at the assignment notebooks.

In fifth grade Religion, we finished up Chapter 5 and will be starting Chapter 6 on Baptism and Confirmation. Ms. Chemak is spending part of the week with the classes in preparation for the Thanksgiving prayer service. The fifth graders will host this beautiful service on Tuesday of next week, and of course, on Thanksgiving morning at 9:00 mass.
We hope you will be able to attend.

Report cards will be sent home this Friday. Parent conferences will be from 12:00-8:00 Monday. You should have received a slip on Monday verifying your time slot.I look forward to seeing you then.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families!

First off, a huge Congratulations to our 5th and 6th graders for that fantastic win on Saturday. They are off to the championship on Saturday and I know we all wish them well. How exciting for all of us!

This week we wind up our chapter on Mesopotamia in sixth grade. Again, there has been quite a bit of information to learn about, but it is quite interesting. The students will be making timelines this week in class as well as preparing for the test next Tuesday. The dioramas will be heading home this week. That was a very fun project and a super learning experience for all of us.

In fifth grade Religion, we will begin reviewing all of the information from Chapter 5. The test will be on Thursday. We continue with Gospel readings and prayer petitions as well. Next week we will begin working on spiritual timelines.

On Friday there will be a short Veteran's Day prayer service in church. We begin collecting supplies for our soldiers. Notes will be sent home regarding this or check the website.

We survived the craziness of Halloween and now move on to November. Today is All Saints Day and the sixth grade is hosting the 10 a.m. mass this morning. It should be very nice.

In Social Studies, we begin our next chapter on Mesopotamia. This ancient civilization is very interesting as well. The diorama presentations went well yesterday and the children did a nice job on them. They are on display in our hallway if you want to take a peek someday after school. No tests are scheduled this week.

In Religion, we begin our next unit on Baptism and Confirmation. We will talk about our spiritual history and how we can bring Christ into our community. Even though the rosary month has come and gone, I urged the students to say it on their own or with a family member on occasion. It is such a beautiful tradition that we should keep in our families.

I hope your week is great! Enjoy the nice days ahead.
