It was so nice to many of you at Open House yesterday. The children were very proud of all their work. We have a busy and fun week ahead of us. Today we enjoyed listening to the St. Rita Band in the gym, and after that the 8th grade came and read books to the 1st graders. Tomorrow is backwards day. The children may wear their uniforms shirts and jumpers backwards to school. We also will watch the movie Dolphin Tale in the afternoon. Wednesday is sports day. They may wear a sports jersey over their uniform. Thursday is crazy hat today, and Friday we have a guest speaker.

We will manage to squeeze in a little learning this week! Stories for the week are, "THE ROLLING RICE CAKE," and "THE RAT and THE CAT."

VOCABULARY - be friend pretty soon your

SPELLING - like ride nice white time five your friend never rabbit

We will be reading and writing words with long vowel sounds o and i, and words with medial consonants.

The children brought home today a paper explaining a service act that they can perform this week. When they have completed an act of service, fill out the little piece of paper and return it to school.

                                                      Have a good week!

Welcome Back and Happy New Year to all. I would like to thank you for all your generous and thoughtful gifts. I can tell the children all had a great Christmas from all the neat gifts they have brought in for Show and Tell.

In Math the concept of fractions is introduced by exploring the concept of equal or fair shares. We will explore the meaning of halves, thirds, and fourths by coloring parts of geometric shapes.

I also need a baby picture of your child for a special project we are doing for Catholic Schools Week. A picture between 1 month and a year would be great. If you could send it in by the end of the week, I would appreciate it.

Week of November 7th - 11th

It sounds like the girls had a wonderful time at the mother- daughter tea this weekend. We had some lucky winners from our classroom. They were telling me about all the delicious salads they were eating. Something to be thankful for, spending time with our moms. You can't beat that! Speaking of being thankful, I have enjoyed reading your TURKEYS. We are sharing these with each other, and I can see that the children are truly touched when they hear what their family members are thankful for.

Our stories this week are, "THE BIG MESS " and "THE LITTLE RED HEN." We begin reviewing the sound of the short vowel e. We will read, spell, build, and write many
words with short e.

VOCABULARY - help now said so who

SPELLING - red bed fed tell well mess

In Math we continue to add and subtract numbers. I am teaching them to count on to add, and count back to subtract.

We are reading about some of the saints in our Religion book. The children are writing their ideas about how they can be like saints. I told them that we have many living saints among us. I think your names were mentioned.

All the word wall words from Unit 2 were sent home today. I will begin testing the children on Wednesday. Again thanks for all your help. Have a great week.

We had a wonderful Halloween party thanks to all of you! Thank you to Mrs. Conway, and all the moms who helped that day. Thanks for the delicious treats, candy, juice boxes, and all the great prizes.

Stories for the week are, "A BIG JOB" and "SWEET POTATO PIE." This will take us to the end of Unit 2. Next week we will have a test on all of our word wall words from this unit. I will send home a list with all the words this week. At the end of the book there is a pictionary with many words the children can practice reading too.

VOCABULARY - by eat sing stop them

SPELLING - hot not got mop hop top

In Phonics we are reading and writing words with the vowel sounds short a, i, and o. I sent home fluency practice papers with words that contain these short vowels. This also is great practice for them.

In Math we are exploring subtraction. We will then learn the relation between addition and subtraction. We practice facts every day. They do like their Math.

I sent home a Family Turkey Project today. We are grateful for your help with this.

The Scholastic book order is due November 11th.

Looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks for conferences.

Happy Birthday this month to Marty, Jack, and Rayna!

Week of October 24th - 31st

Happy Monday again. These Mondays seem to come around very quickly! The children came home today with 2 notes. One was from me, and one was from our room mom, Mrs. Conway. Thank you in advance for your help with our Halloween party.

The stories for the week are - "JOG, FROG, JOG" and "TADPOLE TO FROG."
Please read the stories a few times each night. I tell the children to go back and read the stories from previous weeks too. Practice makes perfect!

VOCABULARY - does he into this water

SPELLING - job jobs dog dogs log logs

Every day we practice reading and writing words with short a, and short i. Next we will be adding short o to our list. It is very important that the children can blend the consonants with these vowel sounds.

In Math we continue to practice the addition facts. If you have flashcards at home it would be great practice for your child to spend some time on these a few nights a week.
Soon we will learn different strategies to help us add and subtract numbers to 12.

Friday of this week the children may wear a touch of pink with their uniform in honor of breast cancer awareness. On Halloween they are asked to bring in a dollar in support of a few different charities.

                                     Have a great week!

Week of October 17th - 21st

Welcome to a new week! I can't believe it is the middle of October already.

Stories for the week are - FISH MIX, and HOW MANY FISH? We are hearing many "fishy" stories this week. The children are teling us about the fish they caught that were "this big!"

VOCABULARY - how many on they why
SPELLING - fix mix six in him did

The children are beginning to write sentences using their spelling words. For now I want them to write simple sentences using words they already know how to spell. They can use the word wall words, and the back of our reader has many words they can use too. This is also something they could practice at home too.

I will also be sending their Math flashcards home this week. We will begin working on addition, and it would be great practice for them to do these a few nights a week. When we start subtraction I will let you know. These may stay at home for you to use.

During the month of October we will be learning a little about the rosary. If the children have a rosary they could bring it to school. We will take good care of them.

Thank you for all your help at home!
