It was so nice to many of you at Open House yesterday. The children were very proud of all their work. We have a busy and fun week ahead of us. Today we enjoyed listening to the St. Rita Band in the gym, and after that the 8th grade came and read books to the 1st graders. Tomorrow is backwards day. The children may wear their uniforms shirts and jumpers backwards to school. We also will watch the movie Dolphin Tale in the afternoon. Wednesday is sports day. They may wear a sports jersey over their uniform. Thursday is crazy hat today, and Friday we have a guest speaker.

We will manage to squeeze in a little learning this week! Stories for the week are, "THE ROLLING RICE CAKE," and "THE RAT and THE CAT."

We will be reading and writing words with long vowel sounds o and i, and words with medial consonants.

The children brought home today a paper explaining a service act that they can perform this week. When they have completed an act of service, fill out the little piece of paper and return it to school.

Week of January 16th - 20th

Welcome back from a nice long weekend! The children talked about why Monday was a holiday. We learned that some holidays honor important people, and we learned why Martin Luther King, Jr. was an important man.

The stories for the week are - "THE SAME AS YOU" and "CHERRY PIES AND LULLABIES"

We continue to read and write words with the sound of long a, and we will also identify and decode words with the consonant digraphs ch, and th.

I sent home today a long vowel a fluency practice paper for the children to read too.

This week in Math we will begin chapter 6. We will be learning more ways to add and subtract to 12. We will find sums for doubles through 12, and using doubles to find sums for doubles plus one facts.

We have been talking about our Baptism. This is the celebration of us becoming a member of the Catholic Church, and a follower of Jesus. I told the children they may bring in any special rememberance from their Baptism.

Please remember to send in a baby picture of you child for a special project for Catholic Schools Week.

I sent home a Book Order form for the month of February. Please return by 1-31.

Week of January 9th - 13th

Welcome Back and Happy New Year to all. I would like to thank you for all your generous and thoughtful gifts. I can tell the children all had a great Christmas from all the neat gifts they have brought in for Show and Tell.

We begin the new year with a new reader. Stories for the week are, "THE RED STONE GAME, " and "THE GINGERBREAD MAN."

The children came home today with the list of word wall words from Unit 3. I will begin to test them on these words on Wednesday.

We will be concentrating on reading and writing words with the long a vowel sound for the next few weeks.

In Math the concept of fractions is introduced by exploring the concept of equal or fair shares. We will explore the meaning of halves, thirds, and fourths by coloring parts of geometric shapes.

I also need a baby picture of your child for a special project we are doing for Catholic Schools Week. A picture between 1 month and a year would be great. If you could send it in by the end of the week, I would appreciate it.

Today we colored in the flame on the 3rd candle of our Advent wreath. It feels like the season just started.

Thanks to Patrick for a great job last week as our STAR. It is Rayna's turn this week. She will be our last until after Christmas. Jake celebrates his birthday on Friday. Happy Birthday to Jake!

The children have mastered the short sounds of all the vowels. Next we move on to the long vowel sounds. I sent home today a mixed fluency paper with words with all the short vowel sounds.

We have added a few more objectives on Mathletics. This would be great practice over Christmas break.

Week of December 5th - 9th

The children enjoyed the play yesterday. It was a nice break from our daily routine. I liked that we were close, and didn't have to travel far. Santa even made a surprise appearance!

I am also sending home today a Phonics fluency sheet with short e words on one side and short u words on the other. Great practice!!

Children who ordered books from Scholastic will be bringing those home today. I will not order any more books until after Christmas. We also have some overdue books from the library. Please check with your child to see if they returned theirs.

Tomorrow is special lunch!! Thursday we have an all school mass at 10:00 in honor of the Immaculate Conception.

We continue to practice addition, and this week we will explore subtraction.

Patrick is our STAR for the week! We look forward to learning more about Patrick.


Welcome back! Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It was so nice to see all of you at conferences. Now we begin such a busy time.

Today we talked about the holy season of Advent. The children made a little Advent wreath for their lockers. This week we will talk about ways we can prepare for the coming of Jesus on Christmas Day.

In Math we continue to practice adddition facts. We are using number lines and cubes to help us find the right answer.

A reminder that we are off school on Friday. Spelling and reading tests will be on Thursday this week.

Week of November 14th - 18th

Welcome to the last full week before Thanksgiving. Today is the official 1st day of the 2nd trimester. Report cards will go home on Friday, November 18th. Your child came home today with the times for the parent teacher conferences. Looking forward to meeting with you on Monday, November 21st. They also came home today with a letter announcing a new math program that we are beginning here at school. The children seem to very excited, it has many fun and engaging activities for the children to complete online. Their username and password is taped inside their home folder.

Thank you to Marty for a job well done as our STAR for the last week. Ella is the STAR for this week. She has her own chef jacket with her name on it, and lots of great pictures. I enjoy looking at all the great family pictures. They are all so proud of their families!

Week of November 7th - 11th

It sounds like the girls had a wonderful time at the mother- daughter tea this weekend. We had some lucky winners from our classroom. They were telling me about all the delicious salads they were eating. Something to be thankful for, spending time with our moms. You can't beat that! Speaking of being thankful, I have enjoyed reading your TURKEYS. We are sharing these with each other, and I can see that the children are truly touched when they hear what their family members are thankful for.

Our stories this week are, "THE BIG MESS " and "THE LITTLE RED HEN." We begin reviewing the sound of the short vowel e. We will read, spell, build, and write many
words with short e.

In Math we continue to add and subtract numbers. I am teaching them to count on to add, and count back to subtract.

We are reading about some of the saints in our Religion book. The children are writing their ideas about how they can be like saints. I told them that we have many living saints among us. I think your names were mentioned.

All the word wall words from Unit 2 were sent home today. I will begin testing the children on Wednesday. Again thanks for all your help. Have a great week.


We had a wonderful Halloween party thanks to all of you! Thank you to Mrs. Conway, and all the moms who helped that day. Thanks for the delicious treats, candy, juice boxes, and all the great prizes.

Stories for the week are, "A BIG JOB" and "SWEET POTATO PIE." This will take us to the end of Unit 2. Next week we will have a test on all of our word wall words from this unit. I will send home a list with all the words this week. At the end of the book there is a pictionary with many words the children can practice reading too.

In Phonics we are reading and writing words with the vowel sounds short a, i, and o. I sent home fluency practice papers with words that contain these short vowels. This also is great practice for them.

In Math we are exploring subtraction. We will then learn the relation between addition and subtraction. We practice facts every day. They do like their Math.

I sent home a Family Turkey Project today. We are grateful for your help with this.

The Scholastic book order is due November 11th.
