Math Blog

Hi Parents,

Last week's two days of Math were productive. The fifth graders learned terms and translating number sentences into words. Another topic that was grasped quite well was the importance of using parenthesis in a problem.
For the week of August 31, we will study the Commutative and Associative Properties; rearranging numbers (compatible numbers) to make solving easier; solving word problems by understanding the operations; and using critical thinking to determine the rule of pattern for a series of numbers to predict the suceeding numbers.
This material will cover textbook pages 6 to 15. Homework will be textbook problems plus additional work from accompaning worksheets. A quiz will be given on Friday. Don't forget to look over your child's Math notebook and assignment notebook. Also encourage them not to wait until the last minute to study.

Mr. C's. Social Studies Blog, Grade five

Hi Parents,

For the two days of social studies last week, the students became familiar with the textbook. On Thursday, we had a "rap" session about the fifth graders' travel experiences. One student mentioned the "four corners in the United States." We found it on the wall map. The students thought it would be neat to be able to do a pushup while each hand and foot would be in a different state. On friday the students worked in groups to answer a "TEXTBOOK SCAVENGER HUNT" worksheet.
This week students will learn about the Geography of the United States. A map will be made of its five regions. Students will then study the difference between environments and ecosystems. We will cover an overview of the nations government and economy, history, and culture. This material will cover pages 2 to 13. On pages 14 and 15, students will complete the Chapter Review.
