Mr. C's 6th Grade Blog
Week of May 4, 2009

Last week the lesson plans for the 6th grade were impeded. Monday was a normal class with Accelerated Math. On Tuesday, Math was not covered due to a bus ride to Marian Catholic High School for a play, lunch, and then on to the gym for the band concert. On Friday the 6th grade did not have Math because of a half day and May Crowning.

This week the students will be tested on coordinate geometry. They will also receive enrichment on multiplying and dividing integers, with testing. (See page 356) I will provide worksheets for practice and homework. I am hoping to begin Chapter 15 on probability, barring schedule interference. Also, the first ten minutes of Wednesday and Thursday's classes will be used to scan Accelerated Math Homework.

There were three days of regular Math class last week.(with Accelerated Math on Monday) The homework problems on multiplying fractions (copied from the board) had good results. Virtually all the 5th graders understood "cancelling". They will be tested this week.

This week I will begin teaching dividing fractions and the concept of using a "reciprocal". (see page 340-341). The text book is very weak in this area, so I will fortify mastery with worksheets for practice and homework. Hopefully there will be a quiz on Friday.

A reminder that ten minutes is set aside on Wednesday and Thursday for scanning Accelerated Math homework.

I am pleased with the results of the 5th grade Terra Nova Math scores. The test was new,and grading was done by tougher guidelines, but the 5th graders did well.

Do not confuse a Terra Nova percentile score with a regular percent test grade. If 10,000 5th graders took the Terra Nova exam nationwide, an 80 percentile means a student scored higher than 8,000 5th graders. That's pretty strong.

This week, the 6th grade will continue working on Chapter 16, An Introduction to Algebra. Extra time for Accelerated Math scanning will be given on Wednesday and Thursday.

This week , the 5th grade will cover pages 398-399, and Chapter 15 on Probability. Extra time for Accelerated Math scanning will be given on Wednesday and Thursday.
