Hi Parents,

We are off to a nice smooth start in Math. The Heat is stifling, so we are working slower. The 5th graders are, "Getting The Rust Out," with basic arithmetic. On Wednesday, I covered subtracting with zeros, because it can be confusing. This went very well. Thursday, we relearned multiplication with two three-digit multipliers (Multiplying always seems to be a weakness for some reason). It is important that the students are proficient with times tables. Please make a routine to practice with them.

The 6th graders are now relearning/reviewing adding and subtracting fractions. Last year they became very good at it, so it was easier to review. We should be able to learn advanced concepts through the year.

So far discipline has been great. This makes a huge difference to facilitate learning. The kids are good, because of their good family backgrounds. More next week. Thank You

I ENJOYED MEETING SO MANY OF YOU WEDNESDAY EVENING. YOUR KIND WORDS AND SUPPORT ARE APPRECIATED. I AM STILL FINDING TOO MANY 5TH GRADERS, AT FIRST, HAVING DIFFICULTY WITH BASIC MATH, BUT AFTER TEACHING IT TO THEM THEY NOW KNOW WHAT TO DO AND ARE IMPROVING. THE 6TH GRADERS CONTINUE TO GROW CONFIDENT AND MAKING STRONG PROGRESS ( TWO TESTS TO DATE) WITH FRACTIONS.

BAD NEWS FIRST: TOO MANY 5TH GRADE STUDENTS ARE MISSING THEIR MATH HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS. MUCH VALUABLE TEACHING TIME IS WASTED IN WRITING OUT HOMEWORK SLIPS. ALSO, THERE IS A STRONG CORRELATOIN WITH THOSE WHO DO NOT DO THEIR ASSIGNMENTS AND LOWER QUIZ AND TEST SCORES. MANY STUDENTS ARE STILL WEAK IN MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION (TABLES). EXAMPLE: UNABLE TO DIVIDE 18 BY 3. PLEASE REVIEW THESE FACTS WITH YOUR CHILDREN ON A REGULAR BASIS. IT REALLY DOES HELP; STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED BY THE STATE TO HAVE MASTERED MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION TABLES LONG BEFORE ENTERING GRADE 5.

OH YES, THE GOOD NEWS: I JUST SAVED $200 ON MY CAR INSURANCE BY SWITCHING TO GEICO.
